Itadakimasu

This is an ancient Japanese phrase which means 'to humbly receive'. It is used primarily before eating a meal as a way of showing gratitude and respect for everyone and everything involved in making the meal possible. This is a Buddhist concept and way to show respect to nature which supplied the ingredients, to the farmers who grew the produce, and to the people who prepared the meal.

This word itadakimasu has considerable cultural impact in Japanese society as it is taught to their children at an early age.  It is meant to reflect the country’s values of mindfulness, community, and joy of sharing a loving experience with others, through the simple gesture of a word of gratitude.
